CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

I am looking for submissions of poetry, short or flash fiction, short non-fictional essays or autobiographical pieces, for a forthcoming (as yet untitled) anthology to celebrate the life and work of actress Leah Bracknell.

Submissions needn’t be about nor related to Leah or her work. What they must be, however, is brilliant writing, and brilliant artwork, by members of the LGBTQIA+ community who wish to submit to an anthology celebrating queer creativity.

In 1989 Leah joined the cast of Emmerdale as Veterinary student Zoe Tate. In 1993, in a groundbreaking episode, Zoe came out as a lesbian, and remained on the show battling severe homophobia, forging and maintaining relationships, and battling mental health issues until her departure in 2005, making her not only the first character to “come out” on British television, but the first lesbian in a British soap opera, and the longest running lesbian in television history.

Ever.

The creation and portrayal of Zoe Tate changed the course of history for LGBTQIA characters on British television.

In October 2016 Leah Bracknell announced that she had been diagnosed with stage 4 terminal lung cancer. She was 52 years old.

Leah is still fighting.

What she did for the LGBTQIA+ community, and for our positive visibility was unmatchable, and to thank her on behalf of our community, I am creating this anthology, dedicated to her.

ALL of the proceeds from this book will go to The Macmillan Cancer Support Charity.

All submissions should:
- fit with the theme of the journal (a celebration of queer literature and artwork. No horror, sexually explicit themes, violence towards any living creature or unnecessary foul language.
- be by a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.
- be previously unpublished.
- Be your own work.
